James trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London and has worked extensively as an actor,singer, author, and composer in theatre, film, television and radio. Theatre work includes: Tom Jenkins in the world premiere of Scrooge – The Musical with Anthony Newley, going on to be alternative Scrooge in the West End; Inspector Lastrade in Sherlock Holmes – The Musical with Robert Powell: Courfeyrec in Les Miserables (West End and Royal Albert Hall TV Special; Doctor Webster in Jekyll; Henry Miller in Calamity Jane ; Edward (VIII) Prince of Wales in Bertie,; Peter/Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar,; Eddie/Doctor Scott in The Rocky Horror Show; Vince Fontain in Grease ; Bertrand de Poulency in Jeanne; Father Mugglewump in The Twits ; Jacob Marley in A Christmas Carol at the Vasa Theatre, Stockholm; James has recently appeared in Dick Whittington with Paul Daniels at the Theatre Royal, Windsor ; appearances as the Voice of the Plant, Audrey 2 in many productions of Little Shop of Horrors
