Boy Band Babe is Amazing!
Boy what a big smile. Former Boyzone babe Stephen Gately grinned so gorgeously throughout his amazing performance of Joseph.
And with good cause because the show was absolutely brilliant. Bursting with vibrant energy, the feel-fantastic music just kept flowing.
Dressed in an angelic white romper suit and his wondrous coat, Joseph emanated boyish ecstasy. No wonder his 11 dungaree-clad brothers were so jealous. This motley crew came in all shapes and sizes, including a dead ringer for Rik Waller (Russel Hicken), who tackled the high kick dance routines with astounding agility.
The mood proved equally varied, as Joseph took us on his tortuous trip from Canaan to Egypt. Sold as a slave, he cried out a compelling rendition of Close Every Door. Looking slightly drawn, bedraggled and in need of a haircut, Joseph made a convincing serf – were it not for that whopping smile. Besides boasting a stunning voice, his gift for interpreting dreams impressed the Pharaoh, (Trevor Jary) who looked and even sounded like Elvis, the King of rock ‘n’ roll. Flanked by pompom girls sporting mega perms, he delivered a swingerful Stone the Crows. The candy sweet choir children also deserve high praise.
The closing hit Any Dream Will Do fast became a disappointing medley of Any Song Will Do, even if you have only just heard it. This longwinded finale was almost as exasperating as the two show spoiling spectators. But Joseph, bless his coloured coat, deserved the extra lengthy applause for being such a superlative singer and smiler
