Gately Goes For Gold At New London
In a good month for Andrew Lloyd Webber – whose new Tell Me On A Sunday was launched recently at the Century Club on Shaftesbury Avenue – his early musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, was launched to the assembled ranks of the press at the New London Theatre on Monday 17th February.
Joseph has been a popular and profitable touring vehicle for producer Bill Kenwright, who has now brought a new production into the New London, which was the home for two decades to Lloyd Webber’s Cats.
This production stars Boyzone (and solo) singer Stephen Gately, who’ll flash his loincloth at admiring fans on the opening night, Monday 3rd March. Gately follows in a long line so popular singers in the role, and Joseph marks his musical stage debut.
An attractive personality allied to good looks and a boyish vulnerability make him ideal casting in the role, and Kenwright and Lloyd Webber (not to mention lyricist Sir Tim Rice) must be hoping that they’ll be able to sing I Close my Eyes all the way to the bank.
